Recently selected as one of Selfridges’ Bright Young Things, new designer Shao Yen Chen has high hopes for the future. Originally from Taiwan, Chen moved to London in 2003, where he studied at Central Saint Martins and interned for the likes of Alexander McQueen and Hussein Chalayan.
Since then, Chen has graduated with an MA in Fashion Knitwear, won first prize for the Fashion Weekend/Le Vif Award, and has now been chosen as one of 25 young designers to watch by one of the most famous retail establishments in fashion.
Shao Yen’s graduate collection at Fashion Week last year was an extravagant parade of white dresses made from an unusual combination of nylon string, cashmere and lycra; the collection pushed the boundaries of traditional knitwear and made it modern, creating interesting silhouettes that were both abstract and sexy.
With a few of his pieces now available from Selfridges, Shao Yen is on the way to success.
